I must go abroad one Christmas unfortunately this year I'm working on the Friday before and having travelled cross country my experience of trying to travel in the run up to Christmas has an element of Plaines Trains and Automobiles minus the amusing mishaps and heart-warming ending.
Possibly minus trains and planes given the strikes*. Good luck on your travels.

It's best to go abroad either in the 2-3 weeks before Christmas or some days after Christmas. Christmas Day itself is deadly for a tourist as everything is shut and if you do not have family or friends in that country then it is very lonely. Before Xmas itself you get the Xmas shopping, markets, unusual traditional stuff and after you get the sales! UK folk would best avoid travel this year, frankly. Instead snuggle up at home with some good food, warm drinks and and huggy teddy (the soft toy or the lingerie variety, whichever appeals most) Sue x
